DIY Solar Power
If you have come to the conclusion that you would like to stop being dependent on fossil fuels and start saving money on your utility bills you are not alone. Solar power is increasingly becoming a popular way to achieve these goals. Solar panels use the suns rays to produce electricity that can be used to solar power your
If you are like me, the majority of your monthly bills come from utilities. Before switching to solar, my electric bills were running close to $600 dollars a month. Living in Florida, cooling my house in the summer accounted for half of my utility expenses. After building my own solar panels, I was able to bring my electric bill down too about $75 dollars a month. I am hoping as I continue to grow my solar power system, I will eliminate this entirely.
After using the kit I found on the nomorelightbills.com website, I can now build a good solar panel in about a day and a half for just under $200 dollars. I will say though, before you begin a solar project, do your research and consider your budget. Keep in mind that you don’t have to build your whole system to get started. Just start with one panel at a time and you will be powering your home in no time.
The other part of the equation that many people forget when they are just starting the first solar project is energy storage. The solar power you produce can be stored in batteries for days when the sun isn’t at its full potential. These deep cell batteries can be expensive costing about $600 dollars so it is important to find free sources that you can tap into to obtain your batteries. They are out there but you have to know how to find them.
Once you build your solar system, the panels can be placed on your roof or you can build them to stand in your backyard. It really comes down to the amount of space you have and your personal preference. I mounted mine on the ground with turning posts so that I can angle them depending on where the sun is shining. The solar panels through a chemical reaction will create a DC current which will then be inverted into AC current that can be used in your home. The good thing about solar panels is that they last a very long time, sometimes as long as 20 years, before they need to be replaced. Once you have saved enough money on your electric bill to pay for your new system, you will have free electricity for years to come.
